Dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and smartphone have unique advantages and great potentials in improving traffic safety. DSRC is a potential technology that allows drivers to get driving information of other vehicles in a range beyond their normal vision, which provides support for vehicle driving safety. Smartphones integrate a variety of sensors and interfaces. In this paper, the DSRC-based rear-end collision warning application for android smartphone is proposed, which warns the driver when it detects subject vehicle is in risk of collision. In order to offer the best warning and mitigation mechanisms to interact with the driver, the collision avoidance warning strategy with three levels of warning is developed. The test results show that the proposed DSRC-based rear-end collision warning application has high correct warning rates in different warning levels.
