It is not easy to evaluate the safety of construction equipment because it receives various and severe dynamic loads during work. For a competitive design, however, it is required to precisely predict a fatigue life within a short design period. Analysis methods based on rigid multi-body dynamic analysis followed by multiple static stress analyses have some difficulties in considering asymmetric structural behaviors and are very cumbersome to be used in predicting the fatigue lives of welded joints due to many analysis data. Therefore, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis could be used to overcome these difficulties and some application results are introduced here. In this paper, shovel-typed and hoe-typed excavators and a wheel loader are dynamically simulated and their results are compared with the measured data during field test. One or two cycles of digging and dumping operations are simulated to obtain the strains of flexible bodies by using the modal superposition method. Strain results at particular locations were compared with test data. As results, it is confirmed that the strains during real time working cycle can be described quite satisfactorily by this method. Moreover, it is shown that an optimization analysis can generate a lighter design scantlings with increased durability.
