To suppress the outflow of ammonia from a catalyst while promoting the decontamination of NOx in the catalyst.SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine includes a catalyst 20 that is disposed in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine and is capable of storing oxygen, an oxygen storage amount calculation unit 61 that calculates the amount of oxygen stored in a downstream portion of the catalyst, and an air-fuel ratio control unit 62 that controls the air-fuel ratio of the inflow exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst. The air-fuel ratio control unit executes rich control for making the air-fuel ratio of the inflow exhaust gas richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, and when the amount of oxygen storage is relatively large, controls the air-fuel ratio of the inflow exhaust gas so that the amount of reducing agent supplied to the catalyst in the rich control increases as compared with that when the amount of oxygen storage is relatively small.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
