Death by motor vehicle collision/crash (MVC) is currently the fifth leading cause of death for all Americans and costs hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Critical elements of automotive biomechanics are essential for EMS physicians and providers to understand to properly assess and care for persons in MVCs. Acceleration and deceleration forces are tolerated differently by patients at the extremes of age and contribute to patient injury patterns. Automotive safety equipment such as seat belts, airbags, and vehicle deformation (crumple) zones effectively increase the stopping distance for the vehicle occupant during a crash. Properly evaluating the crash scenario will help EMS physicians and providers to predict the most likely injuries they will need to treat. Major crash types include planar crashes, rollovers, and a host of unusual crashes. Each of these crash types has its own injury patterns and concerns. Emerging technology, such as advanced automated crash notification, will enable providers to get the right help to injured occupants in the shortest amount of time.
