This paper will provide an insight into the required expertise and the new challenges faced by terminal vendors willing to engage in the emerging field of automotive telematics. A special emphasis will be put on the security and safety applications in the broader context of marketing telematics terminals. The paper will also identify the main technological and commercial barriers that a terminal vendor has to overcome in order to successfully position and establish itself on the market, and will stress the importance of line-fitted solutions as opposed to aftermarket solutions. A broad range of market research results will prove that safety and security are the most important recognisable benefits for the telematics end-user. From the wide variety of marketing questions posed by the utterly new domain of safety and security in-car telematics, awareness, affordability and availability emerge as the main critical factors driving the long-term sustainable growth of the market.
