During the feasibility study of a coastal survey vessel with catamaran hullform for the Italian Navy, sea-keeping behaviour was identified as a major concern. In order to reduce the risk of poor sea-keeping qualities, two sets of sea-keeping towing tank tests have been carried out, for two different hullforms (one with symmetrical hulls and one with asymmetrical hulls). The data obtained from the towing tank tests have been used also for the assessment of three different computer programs (two 2D strip theory and one 3D diffraction theory). The final results of the correlation study are presented; the 2D-twin program appears to be the most reliable and accurate tool for the predictions of the vertical motions of a symmetric catamaran. Its effectiveness for an asymmetric cambered geometry of the demi-hulls is less satisfactory, especially as regards pitch motions. The prediction of the roll motions requires further investigation. The 3D-twin program showed unexpectedly bad peformances, mainly attributable to the preliminary nature of the release of the code for a true catamaran geometry.
