The use of a millimetre wave radar with a distributed reference target mounted onto the guard-real is one mean to obtaining the lateral position information useful for vehicle lateral control. The geometry of the reference target consists of a metallic 90 deg wedge that has goodback-scattering characteristics when illuminated in the direction perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. This permits to measure the lateral distance apart from the angular position of the vehicle. The onboard system, which is still under development within the framework of an EUREKA-Prometheus project, consist of a 35 GHz radar whose signals are treated by a Digtial Signal Multi Processor. A method to recognise band track the reference line in real motor way scenery is presented. The algorithm implemented is based on a spectral analysis of the IF signals able to give in real-time the lateral scenery RF-image. On the basis of presistent concept the algorithm recognises the reference target, than a locking process allows continous tracking also in presence of high back scattering disturbing targets.
