Recent developments in laser marking technology and its application to the identification of electrical wires are discussed. This technology has recently been implemented in advanced manufacturing systems within the aerospace industry, and is suggested as a potential replacement to the system of colour coding of wires commonly used throughout the automotive industry. The outlook for the successful implementation of this technology within the automotive industry is discussed, taking into consideration the basic process technology, the materials in use, the requirements of the industry and the design and capabilities of wire marking systems. The technical and cost benefits of laser wire marking are discussed.
