This article provides an assessment of the potential of high temperature superconductivity (HTS) to revolutionize numerous aspects of space flight and space science. Following a brief review of how conventional superconductors have benefitted space science, the article identifies a wide variety of promising space applications for HTS and discusses associated benefits and developmental efforts. Specifically, the article covers applications of HTS to: microwave communications, remote sensing, cryogenic systems, and space power and propulsion. Additionally, several more speculative applications are introduced. An assessment of the current state of HTS materials technology with reference to the requirements of space applications is provided.
