In a large airplane hydraulic actuators typically central the flaps and slats in the wing's high-lift system and the motion of the landing gear. In turn, the reliability and to same extend the performance of the entire hydraulic system, is dependent an the state of the hydraulic fluid that powers these actuators. Current practice in aircraft maintenance is tapping fluid from the hydraulic system during regular checks and performing laboratory analysis for e.g. water content, acidity and particle contamination. In the following it is reported on an onboard sensor System that allows these critical parameters to be tested by purely optical means without tapping fluid from the hydraulic system. Such sensor systems provide the basis for innovative maintenance-on-demand procedures.
