In modern aircraft, the electrical generators are directly coupled to the turbines, hence driven by a varying rotational speed. The voltage is varying between 90 VRMS and 130 VRMS at frequencies between 360 Hz and 800 Hz. In order to realize a power factor corrected front end for various loads, a digitally controlled three phase power factor correction unit was designed, which achieves a constant DC-link voltage of 400 V and is targeted for loads up to 2 kVA, but designed for a maximum load of 100 kVA by changing a few power devices. The paper presents an innovative approach and scalable architecture for a digitally controlled three phase PFC stage when input voltage amplitude and frequency are varying, as specified for a modern aircraft system. The outlined system is a cost-, weight- and size efficient way to fulfil the specified constraints and serves as front end for multi purpose loads up to 2 kVA - like DC/DC converters, uninterruptible power supplies or inverters - by generating a constant DC link voltage of 400 V. Together with a DC/DC converter and an Output converter the presented PFC-Front-End can be used to generate a constant three phase voltage output of 115 VRMS at a fixed frequency of 400 Hz like in former standards for fixed frequency networks for aircrafts.
