Through progress of innovative simulation methods and computer improvements the vehicle development process has clearly developed in the last decade. Expectations regarding the speed and the grade of maturity of the development, increased continuously by the frequent employment of digital methods. In this regard the development process of the Mercedes Car Group has continued to be optimized and divided into a first phase with digital prototypes (DPT), and a second phase with hardware prototypes. From the first step of the digital phase on up to the hardware phase, the development orients itself on the goal vehicle. Focusing on the goal vehicle by means of the DPT, the responsibility of the simulation in the early development phase gained more importance. The evaluation and optimization of the vehicle functions now takes place on a common database. With the introduction of digital prototypes the grade of maturity of the first hardware prototypes can be clearly increased. A final and comprehensive vehicle testing is however also in the future essential.
