With the increasing traffic flow all over Europe nowadays vehicle navigation systems almost reach their limits in supporting traffic efficiency and safety. This paper outlines the basic concepts and achieved results of the INVENT project, that aimed on more efficient use of the given road infrastructure by providing strategic route information to drivers through the use of so-called hybrid routing services. The route calculation is based on accurate knowledge about the state of traffic on the given road network as well as on environmental conditions. Further optimization of dynamic route guidance based on the results of INVENT is the goal of the AKTIV project. Here additional communication channels are applied to the system, i.e. car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communication. The vehicle itself collects and stores data while driving and combines it with information received from other vehicles or from a central information server. A 'local knowledge base' is used as a basis for enhanced route calculation and guidance.
