Overhead presentation. DaimlerChrysler's roadmap to the energy for the future comprises the following steps from today to tomorrow: optimization of combustion engines, improvement of conventional fuels, alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles, fuel cell technology. The hybrid technology needs to provide a set of hardware and software components that tackles competing vehicle targets successfully such as comfort, consumer relevant fuel economy, regulatory test cycles and performance. There are different drivetrain concepts presented in the paper: conventional drivetrain, parallel hybrid, split hybrid, serial hybrid and electric drive. A lot of hybrid concepts (two-mode, one-mode, serial hybrid, one-mode plus reduction gear etc. are feasible. Taking into consideration fuel economy, cost and comfort the two-mode hybrid concept is top. In the paper the hybrid development centre, a cooperation of DaimlerChrysler, GM and BMW is presented. The scope of the cooperation, namely joint development for individual applications, is presented. The cooperation helps manage the substantial economic burden, advances technology development and sets industry standards and maintains the brand characteristics.
