This paper considers the problems, solutions and costs associated with migrating existing ECU software to an ECU based on AUTOSAR. The AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture (AUTOSAR) offers a completely new way of thinking about and implementing automotive software systems. However, there is significant legacy software that has been implemented and is proven in use. To make AUTOSAR cost-effective in the short term, this legacy software will need to be re-worked, but in a way that involves minimal rewriting and restructuring while at the same time realising the benefits that the AUTOSAR software architecture brings. This paper shows that a legacy ECU can be re-factored with to work under AUTOSAR. Clearly, there are costs associated with this re-factoring. There are fixed costs incurred by the initial re-engineering process, but the architecture of legacy applications provides the much of the same architectural structure required by AUTOSAR so relatively little effort is needed. There are also runtime costs associated with providing the new abstraction mechanisms. Adding the RTE is not free, but it can be made very efficient and memory overheads can be minimised through careful scoping of software components so that they export as small an interface as possible.
