A simplified model is proposed to study the effect of cargo shifting on vehicle lateral stability, considering a situation in which a half-truck negotiates a constant radius curve while carries a laterally restrained cargo. The six degree-of-freedom system includes bounce, roll and lateral vibration of vehicle's sprung and unsprung masses, as well as the lateral position of the cargo on the truck's deck. Cargo shifting results from a combination of vehicle and cargo responses to lateral acceleration and pavement input. The effect of cargo shifting on road safety is established throughout the lateral load transfer of the vehicle and the forces developed within the tiedowns. Results reveal that load transfer ratio can go up to 70 percent as a result of cargo shifting, when compared with the non-shifting situation. Also, that forces in tiedowns, due to cargo shifting, can reach values around the weight of the cargo, as a function of pavement condition
