When vehicles overtake or cross one another they generate transient aerodynamic forces on both vehicles. Recent extensive dynamic tests show that the aerodynamics involved in by-passing manoeuvres can have negligible unsteady behaviour on an overtaken vehicle up to reasonably high relative passing speeds while, on the other hand, the overtaking vehicle is subjected to significant unsteady effects. These attenuate the forces normally expected from quasi-steady considerations. For the model shapes tested (two Ahmed bodies) this means that simple static measurements will allow good predictions of the magnitude of the transient forces that will act on an overtaken vehicle but will be valid for an overtaking vehicle only at low overtaking velocities. As for the pseudo-harmonic period of the transient forces generated, it is only affected by the passing speed in as much as unsteady effects are present. There is still much left to be understood.
