An X-ray diffraction and DSC study has been performed on solid solutions of Phase Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate (ammonium nitrate (AN) and potassium nitrate (KN) to obtain equilibrium AN-KN phase diagram. Phase Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate (PSAN) solid solutions were made by freeze-dry process, where aqueous solutions of the KN/AN were frozen, and then subjected to gradual increase in temperature in the freeze drier. This allows the evaporation of water leaving the PSAN dried with very fine particle size distribution. In-situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and DSC have been performed to determine the structure and crystal lattice parameters of the PSAN at a temperature range of ambient to 100 deg C (373 K). The single AN III phase region is important for automobile air bag applications. The in-situ XRD, DSC results, phase diagram, phase boundary calculation using 'FactSage' program is presented.
