A comprehensive simulation-based vehicle thermal management system (VTMS) has been developed. Two approaches have been facilitated in this VTMS. Namely, 1-D based simulation system and a 3-D based simulation system. In the 1-D approach, the gas circuit, coolant circuit, oil circuit and the structure of the engine as well as the interaction between these circuits/components have been considered. The interaction between these codes is steered by a vehicle simulation code, which is also used to provide the load, operating conditions and the environmental conditions to these 1-D codes. The 3-D VTMS can be used to simulate the interaction between the gas and the structure from one side and the structure and the coolant from the other side. In this case, 3-D CFD (FIRE) has been coupled to finite elements programs (ABAQUS and NASTRAN) and thermodynamic code BOOST. The CFD code is also used to study the passenger thermal comfort. The use of 1-D and the 3-D systems depends on the development phase as well as the availability of the information during the vehicle development process.
