In response to the need for more power in future vehicles, it is planned for the automotive system voltage to be increased from 14 VDC to 42 VDC within the next few years. The main objective for this change are the reduction of fuel consumption and the introduction of new features. The new power network has to accommodate the increased energy demand of comfort and security devices as well as the electrical needs of major systems such as braking, electric power steering, and suspension. The introduction of a higher level of system voltage forces considerable component and system changes regarding reliability and electrical safety. The author discusses the impact of automotive 42 VDC on the electrical contacts of switching devices and connectors and gives an overview about the different kinds of arc faults.
