The semi-solid processing (SSP) of AZ91D magnesium alloy was studied. The semi-solid feedstock was prepared with hot extrusion of cast billet. The slug cut from the extruded bar was partially remelted on 6-stationed medium frequency induction heating equipment. Thixocasting was carried out with a conventional 2500 kN cold chamber diecasting machine to get connecting rod of air compressor for motor car. The microstructural evolution during hot-extrusion, reheating and semi-solid diecasting and its effect on the quality of formed part were investigated. The mechanism of liquid formation during reheating was also discussed.
