Presents a real-time neural-net-based intelligent performance and emissions prediction system for internal combustion engines. Advanced engines, with infinitely-variable valve timing and direct injection, will require adaptive control. The system presented includes a virtual sensing system that automatically develops engine control laws by learning the engine's behaviour over time. This allows an optimised and adaptive control system to develop with minimal effort.
