In the Automotive Industry comfort issues became more and more important in the last 10 to 20 years. Due to its high noise levels brake squeal is a problem, which causes very high warranty costs every year, although it is not affecting the brake performance at all. This shows, that there is no brake design on the market, which robustness in terms of noise meets the requirements of car drivers. One reason, which makes it difficult to develop 'noise free' designs, is the high dynamical complexity of the vibrating structure. Another problem is, that the dominant excitation process has not yet been fully understood. In this paper several mathematical models of a brake system are presented, which can predict some influences of design parameters on noise. The models are experimentally validated and special test procedures are used to investigate, experimentally the noise behavior of the brake.
