The effects of magnetization patterns on motor performance in a brushless DC motor are studied for various types of permanent ring magnets. In order to avoid theoretical magnetization patterns, such as sinusoidal, two types of continuous magnetization patterns are obtained by estimating flux patterns produced in magnetizing fixtures. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to examine the change in motor performance including BEMF waveform and cogging torque due to the continuous magnetization patterns. The FEA results for the conventionally used radial magnetization and Halbach array are also presented for the purpose of comparison. Both sinusoidal BEMF waveforms and trapezoidal BEMF waveforms are shown to be obtainable using the appropriate continuous magnetization patterns.
