A new concept of an oil-lubricated stern tube seal, which consists of lip seals and segmented circumferential seals, has been developed. In this seal, compressed air is supplied to the seals to maintain a stable air barrier between the seawater side and the oil side of the stern tube bearing, completely separating the two fluids. This new stern tube seal employs segmented circumferential seals as one of the sealing elements providing a number of improved features over conventional lip-type stern tube seals, which seal both seawater and lubricating oil by a narrow contact area of the seal lips on the surface of the sleeve liner. This paper describes both the development process, during which seven seal models were tested, and the technical features of the developed new seal.
