Two approaches for subsurface gas leak location using electromagnetic sensing have been investigated by analssis and experiment. Both techniques would make use of the Terrascan, a subsurface radar pipe locator which has been developed under partial GRI sponsorship. The first approach involves detection and discrimination of a characteristics electromagnetic leak effect (ELE) echo surrounding a gas leak. (This ELE is most probablycaused by drying of the soil around the leak). The second approach involves sending a radar signal down the inside of a (steel) pipe distribution, and detecting its leak through the pipe wall at the actual leak hole.
