A comprehensive mathematical analysis for evaluating the measured emissions from piston type general aviation aircraft engines is presented and discussed. The analysis is used to calculate the fuel-air ration molecular weight of the exhaust products, and water correction factor. Further, a sensitivity analysis is presented which shows the effects of emission measurement errors on calculated fuel-air ratio. The University's test facility is briefly described and the associated emissions instrumentation is discussed in detail. The experimental results obtained in this facility on the AVCO-Lycoming LIO-320 engine are presented. This includes baseline and lean-out emissions data and the influence of sampling probe location in the exhaust pipe. The influence of leaks in the exhaust system or emissions console are investigated and evaluated in terms of the mathematical model. Experimental data obtained from various facilities are compared and evaluated. (Jensen)
