Hybrid automobiles with flywheels for mechanical energy storage are considered as an alternative to conventional drives. A promising development in this field is presented by the rim-type composite flywheel which differs significantly from the turbine-compressor system as the flywheel rim attachment to its hub is very flexible as to translation and tilting, and as these flexibilities depend upon rotational speed. As in the free-whirling analysis predicted, critical speeds are encountered in the design speed range. Practical ways to increase such critical speeds are suggested. (de Posamentier)
