The response of a boiler to disturbances and control actions depends greatly on certain design features and especially on whether the boiler is steaming alone or in parallel with others. An approximate theory is here developed from first principles to account for the main features of this response in sub-critical drum boilers, covering pressure, water level and steam flow. Factors affecting controllability are identified and their effects illustrated by means of analogue computer predictions based on a recent marine boiler design. Many simplifications have been deliberately made, the intention being to illustrate principles rather than details.
