NASA planners formally announced that the proposed space station project would use a 20-kHz AC power system. Initially, the significance of this decision may be lost in the flood of engineering information generated by a project of this magnitude. However, the decision to use high frequency power will, if the system works out as predicted, have a significant impact on all aerospace design, particularly commercial aviation. Most circuit protection and control was derived from mechanical devices. But the advent of electronic switching has made a move to much higher-frequency power systems practical. The proposed 20-kHz system is based on rapid semiconductor switching, low stored reactive energy, and cycle by cycle control of energy flow. This allows the tailoring of voltage levels and wave shapes to meet a variety of power requirements.
