The growth of urban area rapid mass transit systems has shown a significant rise since WW II, compared to prewar years. In the US most of the increased activity has taken place in the last decade. Currently, there are 71 metros in operation in the world, most of which are being expanded; 16 new systems are under construction. The world-wide growth in electric traction energy (excluding New York City) should be about 3%/year. These systems are important to the economic stability and viability of urban areas.
