Measurement of mean sea level to an accuracy of a few centimeters is an objective of current interest. Present techniques cannot do this satisfactorily. The use of radio interferometry, a method which has demonstrated this few-centimeter precision on land, is proposed as a means of making these sea-level measurements. Characteristic and cost of an ocean-going interferometer system are discussed. It is concluded that natural radio sources can be used. Measurements made with this system would be entirely independent of knowledge of the geoid.
