Propagation characteristics of a collimated laser beam in the natural sea water were investigated. Experiments were made with an argon laser (lambda=5145 aa minutes P=400 mW) in Tago Bay in 1974. The experimental results were compared with those of simulated experiments in the water of turbidity various in kind. Turbidity was controlled by changing the density of Kaolinite. The attenuation characteristics of a collimated beam in the sea water are divided into monopath and multipath regions and a generalized equation was obtained. Conservation of polarization was measured and the linear polarization isolation of 15 dB can be expected at the distance of about 15 attenuation lengths. The possibility of underwater wideband laser communication and that of polarization multiplex are discussed.
