The Human Engineering Laboratory has acquired, as part of its Human Factors Research Simulator (HFRS), a computer-generated, real-time terrain imaging system. This system, better known as HELICON, is used to produce images of terrain features as they would be seen from the front window of a helicopter. It provides a source of constant visual stimuli while collecting pilot performance data related to the research and development of new Army helicopter systems. An important feature of this system is its low cost, which is due to the fact that it uses only off-the-shelf hardware: a VAX 11/780 and an ADAGE 3000 graphics processor. The purpose of this paper is to explain the procedure involved in creating these features. The capabilities and limitations of this terrain imaging system will be discussed, as well as areas in which it is currently being used and possible future applications.
