The two spacecraft built in the Netherlands so far had both an astronomical mission. This mission requires complicated scientific instrument handling procedures and processing of the collected data. Therefore in ANS already, of which the concept dates from the late sixties, an On Board Computer was used and it was made the overall controller of the spacecraft. This made the OBC also a very useful instrument in the integration and test phase. Many programmes have been loaded for individual subsystems and for the integrated satellite. The same philosophy was followed for the more recent IRAS satellite. This paper describes the software of these two satellites and shows that the reprogramming feature of the software allowed in both missions to cope in a very effective way with unexpected events endangering these missions.
