This paper considers the stabilization problem of the flexible cable towed aerial target whose model is established in the form of the multi-body dynamics with finite variable length links and joints, even under the towing aircraft’s trailing vortex and continuous gust disturbance. The 3 degrees of freedom of the target is established, together with the cable-target’s multi-body dynamics model of the towed cable-target. Then, the unmeasurable tensions on the target by the cable are viewed as a kind of disturbances of the dynamics and are estimated with the linear extended state observer. By taking the estimated tension as the feed-forward compensation, the second-order active disturbance rejection control based stabilizer is designed for the target towed by a flexible cable. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method with the simple structure on the stabilization problem of the flexible cable towed aerial target even under the trailing vortex and continuous gust disturbance.
