The increasing adoption of antilock braking systems has focussed attention on the corresponding standards and regulations. The most notable antilock specifications are contained in the European ECE and EEC regulations, within Annex 13 and Annex X, respectively. This paper reviews the construction and performance requirements within these two important antilock Annexes, with particular emphasis on the new requirements adopted during 1985, viz. the introduction of anti-lock ‘categories’, additional definitions and new test procedures, including a ‘split-friction’ test.
