The overall objective of this program is to develop a rear end structure with improved crash energy control characteristics for a full-size perimeter frame American-built automobile. Basic design goals include distribution of concentrated crash forces, control of acceleration (40G square wave response), intrusion control, and compatibility between modified and unmodified vehicles. The report summarizes the results of the baseline test series which was designed to obtain a data base on the crash performance of today's vehicles in a rear end crash. (Author)
