When ship handling performance is to be predicted, extensive knowledge of hydrodynamic forces acting on a given ship is required. While hydrodynamic forces in the lateral direction contribute to the greatest extent, longitudinal forces also play an important role. A review of available data was made regarding resistance, powering and propeller performance for the purpose of maneuvering motion predictions. Resistance and powering predictions used in the preliminary ship design are presented, which are based on the form factor approach. Propeller performance statistical data developed at the Netherland Ship Model Basin are presented, with examples of applications such as accelerating and stopping maneuvers.
