Tests were conducted to determine the suitability of a flexible vinyl-nylon membrane as a helicopter landing site material. Two different weights of material and two different configurations were tested. One configuration was 150' square. The other consisted of four (4) 75' square sections joined in the field to provide a 150' square pad. The test results have shown that the single piece, 150' vinyl-nylon helipad provides a distinct advantage in minimizing dust and mud problems at advanced base helicopter landing sites where more permanent surfacing materials are unavailable or impractical for this purpose. The membrane serves only as an expedient measure over unprepared sand such as experienced in Vietnam. It is recommended that this item be approved for Marine Corps use as an interim measure until a more universal material is developed. (Author)
