A life test of lubricants for the R2 shaft bearings of a spacecraft oscillating scanner mechanism was performed under simulated orbital conditions. The lubricant originally used in the application, a chloroarylalkylsiloxane (CAS) oil, and a linear perfluoropolyalkylether (PEPE) oil failed in less than 2500 h or operation. A poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) oil has been running for more than 11,000 h without any indication of lubricant or system degradation. The performances of the oils are discussed in terms of the boundary lubrication conditions of the test. Keywords: Degradation, Lubricants, Oscillating spacecraft mechanism, Perfluoropolyalkylether wear tests. (JS)
