This report documents the national survey of taxicab operators conducted in the spring of 1982 to assess operational and economic conditions in the industry. Survey questionnaires were sent to each known taxicab operator on the mailing list of the International Taxicab Association. Over 900 operators (30 percent of the industry) responded. Every state is represented in the sample, and no state produced more than 9.3 percent of the responses. The survey shows that the taxicab industry is an important provider of transportation services. It includes, at a minimum, over 3,000 taxi organizations that operate over 100,000 vehicles and carries at least 30 percent as many passengers as all urban buses in the U.S., and at least 76 percent as many as all rail vehicles. Taxis generate more revenue than the entire public transit industry. Areas charted and discussed in this survey report are: (1) industry structure/size; (2) labor/work force; (3) vehicles and fuel; (4) productivity and economy; and (5) fare structures.
