The MSL-2 scheduled mission will be conducted on the Shuttle (STS 61-C) flight, for launch from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at 7:00 AM (EST), on December 18, 1985. Landing is planned at KSC on December 23, 1985, at 7:14 AM (EST) after 5 days of on-orbit operations. This is the first flight of the NASA Material Science Laboratory and accommodates three materials processing facilities and associated experiments. The MSL payload is manifested for NASA science missions for the remainder of this decade into the early 1990's. The primary mission objectives for MSL-2 are the engineering verification of the NASA-developed MSL payload carrier and the on-board materials processing facilities. Secondary payload mission objectives include the availability of processed materials science experiment specimens and flight experiment data for post-flight scientific evaluation. The enclosed MOR describes the payload and mission for the Office of Space Science and Applications MSL-2 payload.
