This report includes the initial results of the performance of the MSL-2 mission which was one element of the payload flown on the STS 24 (61C) flight. The MSL-2 Prelaunch Mission Operation Report (MOR) No. E-674-61C-02, dated December 16, 1985, described the payload and mission, including mission objectives. Mission program management was delegated by the Associate Administrator for the Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA) to the Director of the Flight Systems Division, who was responsible for MSL-2 payload carrier development, experiment and cargo integration, STS integration, and mission operations. Program management of scientific aspects of the mission were vested in the Assistant Associate Administrator (Science) for OSSA and the Director, Microgravity Sciences and Applications Division. These responsibilities included: (1) the selection of investigations/investigators, and (2) the development of experiment facilities, scientific apparatus, samples and specimens, and data analysis. This was the first flight of the NASA Material Science Laboratory (MSL) carrier which accommodated three materials processing facilities and associated experiments. Orbiter and STS performance, results, and status on the STS 24 mission were provided by the Office of Space Flight and published in the STS 24 Post Flight Operations F&port (FOR) No. M-989-61-C dated 4 March, 1986. This Postlaunch MOR supplements the Prelaunch MOR (Report No. E-674-61C-02) and provides a rating of mission success relative to previously established primary objectives. These two documents are designed to be used together as the Prelaunch MOR provides detailed descriptions of the mission, payload, experiments, and planned mission operations.
