In order to enhance its existing VHF AIRCOM service and in view of the potential development of satellite-based data communication services, SITA initiated plans for demonstrations and service trials of an Aeronautical Mobile Satellite Communications system for the benefit of its member airlines. For this purpose the ESA, INMARSAT, and SITA reached an agreement to carry out service trials using the existing MARECS satellite and based upon the development of the ESA PRODAT project. The PRODAT/AIRCOM Service Trials launched in late 1986 were successful and were expected to be completed by July 1991. The experimental work carried out by all involved participants is described briefly.
