A load-bearing structure 10 configured to, during operation, transfer load L from a first part of the structure 11 to a second part of the structure 12 via a load path. The component comprises a matrix material 15; a plurality of longitudinal first reinforcing elements 13 embedded in matrix material 15; and a plurality of longitudinal second reinforcing elements 14 embedded in matrix material 15. The long axis of each first reinforcing element 13 is substantially aligned with a first direction and the long axis of each second reinforcing element 14 is substantially aligned with a second direction, the second direction being substantially perpendicular to the first. Structure 10 has a predefined crack-propagation region 16 to control the propagation of a crack in the structure. Crack-propagation region 16 either comprises only multiple first reinforcing elements 13 or only multiple second reinforcing elements 14. There may be a plurality of third reinforcing elements (18, Fig 1c), substantially perpendicular to the directions of 13,14. The length of reinforcing elements 13, 14 may be at least 50% of the dimension of structure 10. There may be a crack-termination region adjacent region 16 containing no reinforcing elements. The structure may be an aircraft structure.
