A graduated-buoyancy swimming float a plurality of floats 304, 306, 308 may be attached, where the floats can nest together in a stack on the back of the vest. Preferably, the floats use corresponding indents (326, figure 4) and protrusions 318 to provide a snap-fit attachment means between the floats to allow them to stack to one another. Preferably the protrusions and indents are provided around the rim of the float to provide an annular snap-fit joint. Preferably the floats may have a rounded turtle shell shape, which may be provided by the floats having matching concave and convex surfaces so that the floats may be nested by the convex surface of one float fitting into the concave surface of another. Preferably the floats attach to a harness 102 in the form of a vest, where the first float attaches to the harness, and the second and third floats snap-fit to the first float.
