Diving and swimming goggles are characterised in that an elastic membrane 8 forms, at least partially, a compressible air space 9 between the goggles and a wearers eye sockets. The membrane moves to compress that air space to equalise the pressure between the air space and the surrounding water. In use, movement of the membrane 8 is caused by the pressure of water passing through an opening 4 in a dimensionally stable shell 5 which at least partially covers the membrane. The lens 2 of the goggles may be provided with an eye correction factor for eyeglass wearers. The lens may also be provided with a coating, for example anti-fog, scratch protection or UV protection. There may also comprise a pressure equalising valve. The goggles require no pressure equalisation by the wearer and should avoid the incident of baratraumas of the eyes.
