Methods and systems are provided that include obtaining sensor data relating to a roadway on which both a host vehicle and an emergency vehicle are traveling; using map data relating to the road to generate a grid of a plurality of potential cells along the road so that the host vehicle is alongside to give the emergency vehicle a right to pass; prioritizing, via a processor of the host vehicle, the plurality of potential units based on a plurality of different criteria regarding conditions of the host vehicle and the road; selecting, via the processor, a potential unit of the plurality of potential units as an optimal alongside position of the host vehicle along the road based on the priority ranking of the plurality of units; and taking a vehicle action on the host vehicle in terms of the best alongside position according to instructions provided by the processor.
