The invention relates to engine torque smoothing. A method of controlling torque applied to a powertrain of a hybrid vehicle based on the present application includes: operating an engine, the engine being part of the powertrain; estimating an engine generated torque or angular acceleration profile during operation of the engine; identifying, based on the estimated torque or angular acceleration profile, a period in which an instantaneous torque or an instantaneous acceleration expected to be generated by the engine exceeds a specified threshold, the specified threshold being an instantaneous torque threshold or an instantaneous acceleration threshold; and applying reaction torque from the energy source or sink to components of the powertrain during the identified period such that the expected total powertrain torque does not exceed the specified threshold, where the specified threshold varies as a function of engine speed and transmission gear.
